Thesis Title

Energy resources pricing and market structure

Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to examine the evolution of the pricing mechanisms in the global oil, natural gas and coal markets and assess the likelihood that the coal pricing mechanism will evolve in a similar manner as oil or natural gas.

I will also test the hypothesis that a unified global market exists for the steam coal industry. Basing on the premise that coal suppliers are local monopolists/oligopolists competing with each other at the international level, a coal pricing model will be developed and tested against real data.

The significant outcome of the thesis is a new model for coal price that bases on significantly different (and more realistic) assumptions.
