Michael completed an Honours degree in economics at the University of NSW in 1993, then worked as a research assistant at the University of Tasmania from 1994-96, investigating pricing in Australian manufacturing. He was awarded a PhD in economics from Curtin University of Technology in 2000.
Prior to studying economics, he was awarded a BSc. from New England University and gained registration in NSW as a general nurse.
He has taught core microeconomic, macroeconomic and econometric subjects at Curtin University of Technology, University of NSW and Macquarie University.
